Champions Of Change: Demi Schuurs
Introducing HIA #63 Demi Schuurs, WTA doubles tennis player from the Netherlands and advocate for changing the world.
Demi first picked up a racket at age 3 and never looked back. With a pro player for a father and a pro footballer for a brother, sport is just a part of who she is. With her devotion to the craft, it’s no surprise she now has 20 WTA titles to her name. As an advocate for the LGBTQ+ sporting community and the planet, Demi proves that impact isn’t limited to match day, and we’re lucky to have gained a little insight when it comes to her winning mindset.
Hi Demi.
Hi Marcus!
What advice would you give your younger self when you started your career?
Keep having fun, but also to always try to your maximum and maintain the right discipline.
What’s something you wish more people understood about the life of a pro athlete?
They always think it’s just about good weather and money, but they forget a lot about the less nice things.
How do you mentally reset after a tough loss?
It is always different. Sometimes no tennis and rest. Sometimes work harder and practice a lot.
The best piece of advice you've ever received?
Difficult to choose one. Make sure you can be yourself, when you are yourself you can be happy.
What is the most unexpected lesson your sport has taught you about life?
Every day is a new day. It doesn’t matter if I practice bad today, my match can be great tomorrow.
Has there been a fan interaction or message that’s left a lasting impact on you?
Not really. We get a lot of bad messages but that is normal now.
I liked the message that once I gave an interview about pride that people told me they learned from me and could show other people that they were gay instead of hiding it.
How has competing in different countries and cultures impacted you as a person?
It is a privilege to travel so much and do what you like. It’s something extra.
What personal cause or issue are you most passionate about outside of your sport, and why?
I am a perfectionist and that doesn’t always help, but I am sure it helped but for where I am now in my sport.
Cheers for your words Demi, grateful to have you a part of our team.
