Champions Of Change: Eloi Adjavon
HIA’s newest recruit Eloi Adjavon is a pioneering athlete, making Togo history by achieving a series of firsts.
Initially pursuing studies in cinema, Adjavon’s athletic journey took an unexpected turn in 2019 when he raced in his first ever triathlon. 2021 marked his debut as Togo’s first ever competitor in the African Triathlon Cup, a defining moment that lead to an even greater milestone in 2024—becoming the nation’s first olympic triathlete.
Proof of what’s possible when you dream big and back yourself, we’re proud to have a change-maker of his calibre on our team.
Hey Eloi.
Hi Marcus!
What advice would you give your younger self when you started your career?
Don’t be afraid to dream, don’t be afraid to try!
What’s something you wish more people understood about the life of a pro athlete?
It’s not a hobby, it’s a job. It’s a deep and serious commitment. It’s important that the people in your corner truly understand and respect that.
How do you mentally reset after a tough loss?
I try to focus on what I can do better next time, take note of my shortcomings this time to adjust and improve next time. Cliché but true. I also try to use the frustration of “failure” to fuel the fire of motivation.
The best piece of advice you've ever received?
Trust yourself.
What is the most unexpected lesson your sport has taught you about life?
There’s more to life than sports! Live your passion and enjoy it to the fullest, but never forget the people around you.
Has there been a fan interaction or message that’s left a lasting impact on you?
One day I got an email from a young Togolese athlete who wanted to get into triathlon. In his message he told me that he had been so excited to see that there was an international triathlete from Togo and that it had motivated him to give the sport a shot himself! Feeling like I had inspired someone was the greatest feedback I could receive.
How has competing in different countries and cultures impacted you as a person?
It’s reminded me that there is so much richness and value in diversity. Being in and interacting with different cultures is a gift and I am convinced that it makes us better people.
What personal cause or issue are you most passionate about outside of your sport, and why?
I would say nature and the environment. I love sports because I love being active and I love being outdoors. The natural world truly is a wonderful thing and it is so important to take care of it ! We all call this planet our home, let’s keep it beautiful and healthy!
Thanks for the reminder to believe and trust in ourselves Eloi, proud to have your drive a part of the team.
