Champions Of Change: Melissa Humana-Paredes

Beach volleyball ace Melissa Humana-Paredes and HIA’s newest recruit as #235 has carved a path of excellence in the sand.

After claiming silver at the 2011 Under-21 World Championship, she soared to gold at the 2019 World Champs and made history at the Paris 2024 Olympics, bringing home Canada’s first-ever silver medal in women’s beach volleyball. Off the court, Melissa is just as driven. She tracks her carbon footprint with Racing To Zero and rallies fellow athletes as a key member of Eco-Athletes, championing sustainability in sports.

We’re honoured to have had the opportunity to gain more understanding behind the force of Melissa’s competitive fire and environmental leadership.

Hey Melissa.

Hi Marcus!

What advice would you give your younger self when you started your career?

The most important part of your journey, will be the people who come along with you. So, be selective, create a healthy environment, make joy, keep the memories and the rest will come.

What’s something you wish more people understood about the life of a pro athlete?

It's not as glamorous as it seems. The choices we make to pursue this dream are difficult, and more often than not, it can be lonely.

How do you mentally reset after a tough loss?

I like to separate myself from the outcome and objectively look at the takeaways and what needs to be improved. Always easier said than done. It's always good to talk it out either with the team or my sports psych. And win or lose, I always go for pizza.

The best piece of advice you've ever received?

"This too shall pass". When things are not going well, it will pass. And when things are going well, it will also pass. So be there for every moment of the journey, embrace the lows and relish in the highs but don't wish the moments away!

What is the most unexpected lesson your sport has taught you about life?

Not unexpected, but sport has really hammered in the messaging that you can't go through it alone.

Has there been a fan interaction or message that’s left a lasting impact on you?

Yes, I've had a few messages and in-person conversations with people who have thanked me for speaking up on my platform about sustainability, about the importance of protecting each other and the planet. It has really encouraged me and kept me going on this journey.

How has competing in different countries and cultures impacted you as a person?

I've seen so much beauty travelling the world, and I've seen hardships in each country. It's really impacted me and my perception about global unity. We're all experiencing life differently, but we're a collective. It's important to get out there and get a glimpse into how others live; seeing how certain privileges upholds status quo and the need to think of others.

What personal cause or issue are you most passionate about outside of your sport, and why?

Environmental sustainability. Being a beach volleyball player, I have felt first-hand the effects of the climate crisis and have seen how it's directly impacting sports.

Thanks for bringing your valued perspective to the HIA table, Melissa. Appreciate having your drive for change a part of our community.
